GBC-Moscow experts welcomed by Cherepovets Vice-Mayor and Severstal

Agreements on HEALTH@WORK Program Incorporation into “Severstal Health” and “Healthy City Cherepovets” Programs

On August 20, Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GBC) experts met with Mr. Stavrovsky, Director of social department administration of Cherepovets Iron-and-Steel Works (CherMK), one of the largest of Severstal’s plants in Russia. Severstal is Russia’s largest steel producing company that operates facilities in ten countries and employs a workforce of 92,000.

“Severstal Health” program includes comprehensive approach toward protecting and restoring employees’ health through providing health care, rehabilitation and physical activities promotion through sports competitions, events and access to sport facilities. It is implemented by large medical and social department with about 3,000 specialists, including occupational health services, an out-patient clinic with 2300 visits a day, a day clinic with 110 beds and multispecialty hospital (645 beds) with labor and delivery ward and GyN consultation, four retreat centers, Palace of Sports, stadium, ice hockey stadium, etc.

The HEALTH@WORK Program on HIV/AIDS and alcohol abuse was presented at round table on semi-annual results of “Severstal Health” program. The prevention program can enhance employees’ health and it was welcomed by the CherMK social department administration, medical director, health care specialists, and departments’ managers. Further negotiations will take place in September.

On the same day the GBC experts met with Denis Zaitzev, the Vice-Mayor on social projects in Cherepovets city administration. During this meeting the vice-mayor voiced his commitment to promoting health issues for people in Cherepovets and his readiness to support implementation of the HEALTH@WORK Prevention Program in the city.

Cherepovets Iron-and-Steel Works (CherMK) is a metallurgical integrated works: its metallurgical cycle starts with ore processing and ends with manufacturing high process stage products. On the territory of the integrated works, there are coke and sintering production facilities, blast furnaces and steelmaking units, hot rolling and cold rolling shops, as well as unit for production of metals with polymeric and galvanized coating and pipes production.
